Our preschool program is facilitated by certified Early Childhood Educators who provide quality care and education for children ages 30 months to 5 years old.

Hannah Spray, ECE – Program Coordinator
Hannah has been passionate about facilitating children to grow and learn through meaningful experiences for many years. Completing her ECE training at Capilano University in 2010, this passion became profession, and in 2011 she was the recipient of the British Columbia Lieutenant Governor’s Medal for outstanding academic achievement and contribution in a meaningful way to the community.
A fully licensed Early Childhood Educator and member of ECEBC, Hannah has worked alongside educators and children as a full-time preschool educator, special needs aide for children with a range of diverse abilities, private care provider, and as a substitute educator for the StrongStart (ELF) programs and other preschool programs on Salt Spring Island. Having completed two years towards a Bachelor of Science degree, Hannah has a background in investigation and the natural world that she incorporates in the experiences she shares with children. She also enjoys bringing her guitar, ukulele, and other instruments into the class to make music together with the children.
Zoe Chalmers, ECE
After becoming a mother to a beautiful son in 2009, Zoe felt inspired to work with young children and families and in 2014 she completed a diploma in Early Childhood Education and Care through Northern Lights College.
Over the past five years, Zoe’s has worked with children and families in a number of capacities in local preschool programs, as well as facilitated Strong Start (ELF) on both Mayne Island and Salt Spring Island. Passionate about emergent curriculum and nature exploration, Zoe enjoys creating inspiring, supportive and uplifting environments for children and values the importance of learning through play.
Zoe has a background in Wilderness Leadership, Teaching English as a Second Language and supporting adults with diverse needs.
Some of Zoe’s favourite pastimes include; bike riding, hiking, surfing and travel adventures.
Zoe is honoured and excited to be a part of the Little Red Schoolhouse team.
Maia Colqhoun, Educator in Training
Maia has had a passion for early childcare ever since she can remember. For over ten years she has done private nannying for a multitude of different families and occasions.
Maia is currently undergoing both her Waldorf early childcare training and her ECE Diploma education. She focuses on creating emergent curriculums and natural daily rhythms, with a strong passion for outdoor learning. She has lived on Salt Spring for 4 years and happily calls the island home.
Julie Sweetnam, ECE
Julie has been an invaluable member of the Little Red Schoolhouse Society for over 16 years. While she will be moving away from being on the floor as a regular educator for the next year’s program, we are thrilled that she will continue to support our preschool program through administration and substitute educator support.
